Shoei X-15

Shoei's race-track flagship for street riders who go fast — heaviest in class on paper, but the most refined and comfortable race lid I've ever worn.

  • Dual-density liner is easy to slip on but grips your face once strapped

Why this is the best premium race lid I own

Shoei spent five years and 150 wind tunnel iterations on the X-15, and at $999.99 with a 3.79 lb shell, it sits dead-middle on price in the premium race class and at the top on weight. On paper, that's a problem. In real life, I've been wearing this thing for six weeks and the weight has never gotten to me once.

Here's the thing. The X-15 is the most comfortable helmet I currently own, and I think it's because of the dual-material liner. The bottom half of the padding is soft and slips on easy. The top half is grippier and holds tight once you're strapped in. So you get the easy-on feel of an Arai with the locked-in grip of a Supertech R10. I have not felt that combo in any other helmet I've reviewed.

The visor is best-in-class and it's not even close. Tactile detents that lock at every position, a center button that's perfect for gloved fingers, a race-shield lock for track days, and a Pinlock EVO already in the box. Shoei opened the eye port up 5mm vertically over the X-14, so the field of view is huge — especially upward when you're tucked on a supersport. The trade-off, if you ride a naked bike like I do, is you'll glance down a little more to check your speedo. Worth it.

Build quality is a flat 10. Every vent, every cheek pad, every visor mechanism clicks into place with that high-end Shoei feel I couldn't find a single soft spot on. My Cardo Packtalk Pro installed clean, the speaker pockets fit the drivers perfectly, and this is officially my new motovlogging helmet. Snell M2025R, ECE 22.06, and DOT — every safety box checked.

Who should buy this

The X-15 is built for street riders who ride fast, more than it's built for actual club racers. If you're on the grid, you're probably already looking at the AGV Pista or the KYT KX-1 for lower weight and pure FIM focus. But if you spend your weekends on a supersport or a fast naked and you want one premium lid that does everything well — quiet enough for highway days, stable in crosswinds, comfortable for a five-hour ride, and dialed for a Cardo and a chin mount — the X-15 is the move. It earns its Chase Score of 83, a Great tier rating, and it's currently my favorite helmet I've ever reviewed.

* Quick note: if this Chase Score doesn't match the one in the YouTube review, it's because I updated the weight scoring formula in May 2026 and retroactively rescored every helmet on the site to keep the leaderboard fair.
